Clear aligners or braces? An honest comparison

Both can straighten teeth beautifully. The right choice depends on your teeth, your daily habits and how disciplined you can be.

Straight teeth are easier to clean and often give a more confident smile. Today you can usually choose between fixed braces and removable clear aligners. Both move teeth with gentle, steady pressure — but they fit different people.

Clear aligners

  • Nearly invisible plastic trays, changed every one to two weeks
  • Removed for eating and brushing, so food choices stay free
  • Small tooth-coloured “attachments” are usually bonded on some teeth to help them move
  • Must be worn about 20–22 hours every day — if they stay in the box, the teeth do not move

Braces

  • Brackets bonded to the teeth with a wire; metal or tooth-coloured ceramic
  • Work all day without the patient having to remember anything
  • Very good for complex movements, large rotations and bite problems
  • Need extra care when brushing and some foods must be avoided (see our braces food list)

Which one suits me?

Aligners work well for mild to moderate crowding or gaps in adults and teenagers who will wear them faithfully. Braces are often the safer choice for complex cases, younger teenagers and anyone who knows they would forget to wear trays. Some treatments even start with braces and finish with aligners.

What both have in common

Treatment usually takes many months, needs regular check-ups, and ends with a retainer — without it, teeth tend to drift back. Gums must be healthy before starting, so a cleaning often comes first.
