E.max or zirconia veneers? Choosing the right Hollywood smile material
Porcelain (E.max), zirconia or composite veneers — how they differ in look, strength, tooth preparation and lifespan, and how to choose for a natural Hollywood smile.

“Hollywood smile”, “lumineers”, “zircon” — the names are confusing. They all describe thin shells or crowns that change the colour and shape of the front teeth. The material you choose decides how natural the smile looks and how long it lasts.
E.max (lithium disilicate) porcelain
Very thin and translucent, so light passes through it like real enamel. It gives the most natural look for the front teeth and often needs only minimal shaping of the tooth (around 0.3–0.7 mm). It is strong once bonded but should be protected from heavy grinding.
Zirconia
Extremely strong and a good choice for back teeth, bridges or very dark teeth that must be covered. Older zirconia looked opaque and “too white”; newer layered zirconia looks much better, but it usually needs a little more tooth preparation than a thin E.max veneer.
Composite veneers
Built directly on the tooth in one visit, often with little or no drilling, and cheaper. They stain and chip more easily and usually need polishing or repair after a few years.
How to choose
- Healthy teeth, mainly colour and shape → E.max or composite.
- Very dark, heavily filled or broken teeth → zirconia or crowns.
- Grinding at night → a night guard is essential whatever you choose (see teeth grinding).
- Want only a brighter colour? Try whitening first.
A natural Hollywood smile
The best result is not the whitest — it is the shade and shape that suit your face, lips and skin. Ask to see a mock-up before anything is fixed. Read the truth about Hollywood smile before deciding.
