Afraid of the dentist? Practical ways to feel calmer
Dental fear is common and nothing to be ashamed of. Simple steps that make a visit easier — before, during and after.

Many adults delay the dentist for years because of fear — of pain, of the sound of the drill, or of being judged. The problem is that small issues grow while we wait. The good news: dental fear can be managed, and modern dentistry is far gentler than many people remember.
Before the visit
- Say it out loud. Tell the clinic when you book that you are nervous. A good team plans more time and explains more.
- Choose a time when you are not rushed — and not hungry.
- Bring someone you trust, or headphones with your favourite music.
- Avoid strong coffee right before; it can make you feel more anxious.
During the visit
- Agree on a stop signal, such as raising your hand. Knowing you can pause gives a feeling of control.
- Ask the dentist to explain each step before doing it.
- Numbing gel before an injection makes it much more comfortable.
- Breathe slowly: in for four seconds, out for six.
Start small
The first visit can be only a conversation and a look, with no treatment at all. A consultation or a simple cleaning builds trust step by step.
Children learn from us
Children copy our feelings. Speak about the dentist in a positive way and avoid words like “pain” or “needle”. Our first visit guide helps parents prepare.
Seeing what will happen helps too: try our Smile Lab to see treatments in 3D at home. At DR. ELAF Dental Clinic in Dream City, Erbil, we take the time to go gently. Book a calm first visit.
