Pregnancy changes the whole body — including the mouth. Many women are unsure whether they should see the dentist while pregnant. The short answer: yes, dental check-ups and cleanings are safe and recommended.
Why gums bleed more now
Pregnancy hormones make the gums react more strongly to plaque. Many women notice red, swollen or bleeding gums (“pregnancy gingivitis”), most often in the second and third months. Gentle brushing, cleaning between the teeth and a professional cleaning help a lot.
What treatment is safe?
- Check-ups and cleanings: safe at any time
- Needed treatment such as fillings is often most comfortable in the second trimester (months 4–6)
- Emergencies — pain, swelling, infection — should be treated at any stage; an untreated infection is more dangerous than the treatment
- Commonly used local anaesthetics are considered safe in pregnancy; always tell the dentist you are pregnant
- X-rays are taken only when they are really needed, with a low dose and careful technique
Morning sickness and enamel
Stomach acid softens the enamel. After vomiting, rinse with water (or water with a little baking soda) and wait 30–60 minutes before brushing. Read more in acidic drinks and enamel.
Cravings
Frequent snacks and sweet drinks feed decay. Keep sweets to mealtimes, drink water and choose cheese, yoghurt or fruit for snacks.
After the baby arrives
Decay bacteria can pass from parents to babies, so a healthy mouth for the mother helps the child too.
